Captcha Issues and More

August 1, 2013

IF YOU HAVEN’T ENTERED THE TREAT GIVEAWAY, DO THAT NOW! tHE DEADLINE IS TONIGHT!

Welcome to This’n’That Thursday, hosted by 2 Brown Dawgs, designed as a catch up day, with a little bit of this and a little bit of that. I’ve been having Captcha issues, so I’m starting there. Hoping a tech savvy blogger will pipe up with a fix.

Periodically I get emails or comments saying that it’s difficult to leave comments here. The Captcha plays hard to get. I assume that for every comment or email, there are more people who just give up and go away, so I do appreciate those of you who take the time and press in. Thank you!

Aussie mix and Holland Lop
Flash and Humperdink are grateful for your help. Honest.

I’ve been searching off and on for nearly a year, trying to figure out how to turn off the Captcha function (that secret code thingy when you leave a comment). My WordPress theme has a great spam filter, so it’s not like the Captcha is doing anything but making people angry. I think – I THINK – that I removed it yesterday when I deleted a couple of lines of code from the function.php thingy. So I’m asking if y’all could please, pretty please, let me know? Thank you!

Moving on …

My two Egyptian Fayoumi, Jemima and Gandalf, are being re-homed today. They’ve been laying the cutest little eggs! But they’re talkers, and they’re loud, and I have too many hens. We started with ten chicks and two existing hens. Two were roosters – only two! – and I still have ten chickens. I’m only allowed to have six. So the loud mouthed girls are going away today.

A cackling hen
Gandalf, the very loud Egyptian Fayoumi

Relax – they’re going to another pet chicken owner. He offered to trade me for white quail. Do you KNOW how tempting that was?!? My Hunny nearly had a coronary when I told him. But he’s paying cash. I have to ask cash for chickens if I don’t want them winding up in someone’s stew pot.

A hen and her mama
I’m keeping Legolas. She’s bossy, sure, but her forestry skills surpass all the other chickens.

And no, we’re not keeping all eight remaining hens. A month from now a friend is moving from her apartment to a house. Boromir, Gimli and Aragorn will be moving with her. I’ll still have five, which is more than enough.

Best friends
As if five chickens in my suburban backyard isn’t enough, I’m probably stuck with the duck and goose for at least a decade. Good thing they’re best friends.

In our down time, Hunny and I make things. He’s fallen in love with his leather work the last few years, so he spends much of his free time tooling, carving, staining, polishing and stitching. This weekend he was restless and made a ton of stuff. I thought I’d show off his handiwork just a bit. Indulge me, please?

Leather laced coin pouch
This is a little coin pouch. We know a lot of people who do reenactments, and one asked if we’d make a pouch for them. There are belt loops on the back.

He made this one for me, but I think it’s too masculine and will go into my Etsy shop. 🙁

Leather and deer fur bracelet
Yes, the photo is upside down. And yes, that’s deer fur that I tanned. I actually laced the edges of this one.

But this is my favorite – I helped lace the sides.

Leather and deer fur satchel
Everything I own is in this leather cross body satchel. The flap is deer hide I tanned myself last fall. Perk? Being able to pet my bag.

It’s a family affair.

Tonight is the last night of the giveaway. We’re giving away either Crown Knuckle or Steer Sticks, both favorites of dogs everywhere. Please pop over to the giveaway post and leave a comment? You might make your dog very happy just by leaving a comment!

Until I write again …
