Follow Up Friday, the Fried Pickle Edition

August 9, 2013

Today’s Follow Up Friday is hosted by Jodi, at Heart Like a Dog.

Y’all, I laughed all day yesterday, reading comments on yesterday’s post. Who knew that fried pickles would cause such a ruckus? I have to take a moment to explain my limited view of fried pickles. In answer to questions.

Sugar – Did you say you bought fried pickles?

Blueberry’s human –  I have never had fried pickles. What…in…the…world??? So, did you get some? What do they fry them in – is it like breadcrumbs, egg, flour? Are they hot when you eat them? She also wonders what they’d taste like ice cold.

Gizmo – That’s my kind of afternoon…dogs, water, beach, shade and some “interesting” snacks (honestly, I’ve heard of fried pickles but never have tried them…are they battered or breaded?

Jackie – (Fried pickles??)

Houndstooth – Fried pickles, you say? That MIGHT be worth the price of admission right there…

JoAnn just cracked me up –  i had deep fried pickles today also.

Fried pickles at the stream - NOT
Patches is coming when I call because she thinks I’m going to give her a fried pickle

I’ve had fried pickles exactly three times. They sounded gross, so I just didn’t have them, even though I love pickles. The first time was a couple years back at a big fourth of July event and the pickle was whole, a giant dill, battered, deep fried. It was awful. Burning hot when I bit into it, and by the time it was cool enough to eat, it was gross.

The second time was fried pickle chips, battered and deep fried. OM NOM NOM. Just right. Dipped in ranch dressing. Man alive – that’s what fried food should taste like. That and a fried Twinkie might just be Heaven.

Monday the pickles at Blue Hole were battered and fried spears, served with ranch. They tasted amazing, but the whole too-hot-on-the-first-couple-of-bites experience was there. Still delicious. The ranch is the perfect dip.

To answer Blueberry’s human’s question, would they be good ice cold – pretty sure the answer to that is no. Maybe fried pickle chips. It’s not the same as fried chicken. They would just be soggy, I think.

Aussie with a Beefy Straight Crown
Bella, my favorite Australian Shepherd, turned her nose up at fried pickles. Can you imagine?! She opted for the Beefy Straight Crown instead. Picky little thing.

I’m just going to field a couple more questions. Stella Rose always asks the best questions:
This morning on the way to the vet mom saw a whole field of Canadian geese, how will you ever tell Ryan apart from those other geese if he gets loose? do you think you should put a red, white and blue bow on him?
Stella Rose, if Ryan flew away, she’d have to find me. There’s no way I could tell her apart from the others. And if I tried to bow or bell her, she’d rope Jimmy into getting it off of her for sure. Especially an American bow, seeing as she’s Canadian and all.

Sleeping Canada goose on my back porch
I love looking out the back door and seeing a sleeping Canada goose.

In regard to Pippin running back and forth across the road last weekend, 2 Brown Dawgs asks:
Gosh Pippin didn’t end up flat did she? That would be terrible.
Pippin is fine. My husband nearly burst a blood vessel or two, but he brought the chicken home without wringing her neck. We clipped her wings and now she stays home.

Pippin, brown leghorn hen
Pippin is a brown leghorn. She usually doesn’t come near enough or stand still long enough to let me snap a photo.

And I’m going to call it quits for the weekend. Y’all tune in on Monday to see who wins the treat! And tune in on Tuesday to see more dogs eating those treats! I might even have photos from a dog pool party, depending on tomorrow’s weather. Doesn’t that sound like fun?

Until I write again …
