Gotcha Day for Chewy
Today we celebrate Gotcha Day for Chewy! By celebrate I mean that he gets a couple of extra Jones Natural Chews after his morning nap. But I thought it would be fun, this being Throwback Thursday and all, to torture, er regale you with baby pictures of my favorite little dog. I look and wonder how anyone couldn’t have fallen in love.

Chewy was found wandering the streets of Killeen, Texas, when he was only about seven weeks old. He went to live with the sweetest couple, mom and dad to an Italian Greyhound. Based on the photo above, I just thought all Italian Greyhounds were bigger than they are. Until Chewy and I visited them in Atlanta the following fall.

Chewy’s foster parents had him for about five months. They called him Junior. He was this close to being adopted by them. In fact, friends of mine in Salado (near Killeen) tried him out for a weekend, but he wasn’t anything like playful enough for their three active children. When my friend saw we were looking for a lap dog, and one looking Schnauzer-ish, she sent me Chewy’s photo.

We couldn’t say yes fast enough.
How Far Would You Go?
How far would you drive or fly to make a Gotcha Day happen for a dog? I always thought the answer would be that I’d maybe drive an hour to rescue a pup. But no, turns out the answer is really that I’d drive seven hours one way, then turn around the next day and drive home. How could I not? Look at this face.

So I grabbed an overnight bag and several baggies of loose Jones Natural Chews (my friends wound up adopting a different dog, and Chewy’s foster parents needed treats, as well as the lady who ran the adoption group), and jumped in my car. Can I just tell you that I hate driving through Dallas? Hate. Hate isn’t a strong enough word.
Because it was a Saturday evening when I arrived, Chewy’s foster parents and the adoption coordinator all showed up at my friends’ house. We visited and held Chewy for about an hour. There were tears and fond farewells for the wee pup. He was only nine pounds at seven months old. This was three years ago.

Chewy slept all over the bed that night. He was a little disconcerted at not being with his mama and daddy. But it didn’t take him long to get used to his new family and fit in. We got home and he fell madly in love with Flash and Patches, the Aussie mixes. They still really only tolerate him. But we’ve since ended up with a playmate for Chewy – Gadget. His own Gotcha Day is around now. They’re best of friends.

Thanks for reminiscing with me! And now for the giveaway info!
